Ropes / Corde is the title chosen for the seventh edition of Giovane Fotografia Italiana public call
“A rope is a metaphorical image for many different types of bonds. It can hold together the things we do not want to go missing, help us stay together with our traveling companions, it is a useful tool while sailing the seas or climbing mountains towards new horizons, it can rescue us or allow us to escape. But a rope can also block our way, tie us up, prevent us from moving away, keep us in captivity.
The art of photography presents the same ambivalence: it can preserve our origins, keep memories alive, perpetuate bonds, but it can also trap us in our identities and hold us prisoners in a past in which places, people and relationships undergo, through images, an idealization process.
The goal of this edition of Young Italian Photography is to bring to light the tension between these two sides of the time-related dimension of photography.”
The seven photographic projects were selected by a jury composed of Ilaria Campioli and Daniele De Luigi, curators of Giovane Fotografia Italiana; Carine Dolek, Circulation(s). Festival de la Jeune Photographie Européenne; Chiara Fabro, Festival Panoràmic, Granollers – Barcelona; Shoair Mavlian, Photoworks – Brighton Photo Biennial.
